This single fronted, inner-city South Yarra residence had a part of its puzzle missing. The existing single level garage presented the client with the opportunity to create a space above. The challenging brief was to explore the possibility of locating a studio above the existing garage. Having the right design and careful planning considerations, the possibility became a reality.
The upper space comprises of two rooms with the access via a new starcase in the garage space below. It was designed to slope away from the internal courtyard in order to prevent shadowing over the living spaces in the original house. The external shell was wrapped with bronzed copper cladding creating a striking view from the existing residence. The deep inset of the windows allow for no window screening and avoids privacy concerns from the neighbouring properties.
The project required a Full Town Planning Permit and Building Permit.
